Recommended Eats

October 20, 2011 in Food Stuff, Slideshow

There are an abundance of good places to eat in Austin. Here are a few highlights within a 30 minute walk or less!

Home Slice Pizza is located on South Congress. Very yummy NY style pizza place.  It is about a 25-30 minute walk from the hotel or a 10 minute bus ride. Take the 1L or the 1M bus.

The Mighty Cone food trailer is located on South Congress as well.  The Austin Chronicle says, “this is some of the tastiest street food to be found anywhere in Austin”.   Best part:  food is available for less than $10.  Again it is about a 25-30 minute walk from the hotel or a 10 minute bus ride.  Take the 1L or the 1M bus.

Magnolia Cafe on South Congress is a favorite among the locals. It is open 24/7 and serves breakfast 24 hours a day.  It is about a 30 minute walk from the hotel or again you can take the 1L or 1M bus.

Torchy’s Tacos is located in various places throughout Austin, but the closest location to the hotel is at the South 1st food trailer park. At Torchy’s you will find cheap and tasty tacos! What more could you want? Take the bus or you can walk there in about 20 minutes.

Shady Grove located on Barton Springs is an Austin staple.  Great options for meat eaters and vegetarians including their famous “Hippie Sandwich”.  It is voted “Best Outdoor Dining” almost every year in the Austin Chronicle.  It is about a 20 minute walk from the hotel or you can take the bus.

Renaissance Revival at the Texas State Capital

October 20, 2011 in Slideshow, Texas History, Things to Do

Look straight down Congress from the hotel, and you’ll see the Texas State Capital.  Well worth the visit!

Erected in 1888, it’s the largest state capitol in the country, covering 3 acres, and is second in size only to the U.S. capitol — though it is 15  feet taller.  It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.  When it was dedicated it had 392 rooms, 924 windows and 404 doors.  The renovation in the 1990’s  more than doubled the square footage.  And that pink granite you see?  It was donated … though a railroad had to be built to transport it from the quarry.

There are self guided walking tours – you can even download the brochure here.

Oh .. and there are ghosts!  But that’s another post altogether …

Lady Bird Lake

October 12, 2011 in Slideshow, Things to Do

Looking for a beautiful place to go for a walk, run or even a bike ride? Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake) is the perfect spot.  The conference hotel is conveniently located on the banks of the lake.

The roughly 10 mile trail provides excellent views of downtown Austin and lots of shade from the hot Texas sun… although we are hoping it will have cooled off for everyone come mid November.  The hotel offers mountain bike rentals for guests interested in checking out the trail via bicycle.

If you follow the trail, it will take you to one of Austin’s largest and most popular parks, Zilker Park. Zilker hosts a miniature train that is still in operation and the fourth largest natural spring in Texas, Barton Springs.  This natural spring is open year round to the public for swimming, and it is free in November!
