An Austin Must: Breakfast Tacos

October 22, 2011 in Food Stuff

You haven’t experienced Austin until you’ve had tacos for breakfast at least once… and I’m willing to bet once will not be enough. Torchy’s Tacos was already mentioned, and with good reason. The breakfast tacos are huge and super filling. Torchy’s has expanded into a chain in the last few years, so I would recommend the original trailer park location (1311 S. First St.) which conveniently shares a lot with a coffee truck!

The Taco Shack downtown (402 Brazos) is a quick walk from the hotel and has “make your own” breakfast tacos with every topping you could ever need.

Juan in a Million (2300 E. Cesar Chavez St.) might possibly make the perfect breakfast taco. You’re going to want to order a variety of tacos, cover them in Juan’s super hot salsa and wash them down with the horchata. Yum. If you’re feeling brave you can even try to conquer the Don Juan El Taco Grande challenge.

Get an avocado margarita with your breakfast tacos at Curra’s (614 E. Oltorf St.) or just walk across the bridge to La Condesa (400 W. 2nd St.) and order something off their Tequila Menu!

There are an abundance of good places to eat in Austin. Here are a few highlights within a 30 minute walk or less!

Home Slice Pizza is located on South Congress. Very yummy NY style pizza place.  It is about a 25-30 minute walk from the hotel or a 10 minute bus ride. Take the 1L or the 1M bus.

The Mighty Cone food trailer is located on South Congress as well.  The Austin Chronicle says, “this is some of the tastiest street food to be found anywhere in Austin”.   Best part:  food is available for less than $10.  Again it is about a 25-30 minute walk from the hotel or a 10 minute bus ride.  Take the 1L or the 1M bus.

Magnolia Cafe on South Congress is a favorite among the locals. It is open 24/7 and serves breakfast 24 hours a day.  It is about a 30 minute walk from the hotel or again you can take the 1L or 1M bus.

Torchy’s Tacos is located in various places throughout Austin, but the closest location to the hotel is at the South 1st food trailer park. At Torchy’s you will find cheap and tasty tacos! What more could you want? Take the bus or you can walk there in about 20 minutes.

Shady Grove located on Barton Springs is an Austin staple.  Great options for meat eaters and vegetarians including their famous “Hippie Sandwich”.  It is voted “Best Outdoor Dining” almost every year in the Austin Chronicle.  It is about a 20 minute walk from the hotel or you can take the bus.
